Given my appalling lack of updates here since March, you may be forgiven for thinking that I've failed miserably in my aims to do at least one cultural/arty thing each month. Well, as long as you're not following me on Twitter or Facebook, where I've continued to announce these things (if only in a handful of characters). It's just that I've started a new job, and am no longer working at home (with the internet always at hand).
So, what have I been up to since March? Looking back, the months seemed to have blurred, but the shows stand out. I went to my very first opera, with the opening night of the Auckland season of the NBR NZ Opera's The Marriage of Figaro. I laughed, with a good friend, at the wonderfully naughty Avenue Q. I visited Auckland Museum, and crocheted coral for their reef display. I flinched each time a gun was fired at Assassins, and I enjoyed the ensemble cast of Stepping Out.
Peppered among the live theatre, there have been foreign films The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and just recently the follow up The Girl Who Played With Fire (that's this month's effort). The Secret In Their Eyes scored very well with me, and is probably my most recommended movie of the year so far.
My favourite show/event of the year so far? Most definitely seeing Wilco at the Civic Theatre. It was 2 and a half hours of complete enjoyment. Not even an expensive taxi ride home after a missed ferry could undo the goodness of Jeff Tweedy and co. I'd be hard-pressed to say which concert I enjoyed more, Wilco or Green Day back in December. Both were completely different in size, scale and physical energy (and genre, of course), but both equally wowed me.
I've seen a lot of movies - in the mainstream cinemas I've seen Inception, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Kick Ass, Dear John, Killers, Hot Tub Time Machine, Eclipse, Toy Story 3, Predators, Get Him To The Greek, The A-Team, The Losers, How To Train Your Dragon, Letters To Juliet, and I expect, many more I can't recall. As you can see by this list of movies, I'm not all about the high-brow cultural endeavours, I love to laugh at bad movies!
Now I've demonstrated to myself it's better to update as I go, perhaps you'll see more of plans and reviews. On that score, watch out for some chit-chat about the next thing I have tickets for, Macbeth, as performed by NZ Opera. With links, and possibly insightful info, before it actually opens! Maybe.
