Let me start by saying that I think everyone involved in Short + Sweet Auckland deserves another big round of applause, both as a congratulation for their achievements this time, and to encourage their return next year!
Now, whilst I made it to see both the first and second halves of the top twenty ten minute plays, I didn't make it to the wildcard shows, or the gala final held last night. But, I'm not left wondering who won, and if my votes counted. The festival organisers have put up all of the results on their website.
I already knew that my choice in the first week, Waiting for Jim, was well-received, and would have made it to the final if not for a cast-availability issue. I was happy to see that Diagnosis, my pick from the second week, did make it through to the gala final last night. And better than that, it was nominated for a bunch of awards, and won!
The Diagnosis is all good at Short+Sweet Auckland 2010
Auckland writer B.C. Thomson’s hilarious comedy about very modern malaise Diagnosis scooped the pool at the Gala Final of the highly successful inaugural Short+Sweet Auckland at the Herald Theatre at THE EDGE last night.
Diagnosis won the best director award for Cameron Rhodes, best actress for Bronwyn Bradley, Best Comedy Script for Thomson himself as well as the Short+Sweet Award, the major award for the Best Overall Production of the Festival.
The other half of the award winning cast was Mia Blake, who was also nominated for the night’s Best Actress award.
It was a wonderful home coming for Thomson who lives in Sydney these days and has known Rhodes for over twenty years.
Fantastic! You can check out all the nominations and winners in the various categories here. And, you should pop along to your local cinema and watch I'm Not Harry Jenson, a film which features the winning director!
p.s. You should also check out Kris's review of Short + Sweet! If you haven't already, you should check out the blog for The Edge's Kiss My Arts team, some of whom also popped along to Short + Sweet during the season.
Kris and I (and a bunch of others who didn't make the Kiss My Arts team) are expanding our own cultural and arty horizons under heading of #smackmyarts. Our first informal outing was a trip to the Auckland Art Gallery. You can check my review and Kris's preview, if you're interested. And let us know if you are keen to join us next time!
